DEFENSE & AEROSPACE

Three companies, one cliff: Where the Department of Defense's new-prime money really goes.

Cut out the services firms and PE roll-ups, and the Department of Defense’s $16.7 billion in AI spending flows almost entirely to product companies. Three firms captured 78 percent of it, with the largest order coming from Army Contracting Command at Aberdeen. The new primes are not dodging the acquisition system. They are winning inside it. The question now is whether Golden Dome money will narrow the gap at the top or widen it further.

29 nations now on the Army Drone Marketplace.

The Army’s UAS and Counter-UAS Marketplaces are no longer a pilot. Eight nations signed statements of intent at AUSA, bringing total participation to 29 countries and $800 million in transactions since launch. The FMS Fast Lane has cut traditional foreign military sales case development from months to days by pre-clearing technology transfer approvals and export requirements upfront.

Army prepares for critical mineral supply chain deadline.

The Army expects some disruption as a January 2027 deadline approaches for defense contractors to eliminate critical minerals sourced from China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. Officials say mapping supply chains down to the raw-material level remains a challenge, but anticipate a gradual adjustment rather than a cliff-edge shock.

  • A Pentagon task force is working to transform Golden Dome from concept into an operational missile defense system.

DHS FY27 budget: $118B request, $11.7B for IT, and new counter-drone money across four components.

DHS is requesting $118.39 billion for FY27, including $11.7 billion for IT, the second-highest civilian agency IT ask behind only VA. Counter-drone funding flows to CBP, the Coast Guard, and FEMA, with a $500 million FEMA counter-UAS grant program funded through reconciliation. On top of the annual request, DHS still has billions in multi-year reconciliation money to spend. The department is operating under a CR through December 11, meaning the real spending doesn’t start until Congress acts.
