Senators call for security funding boost.

Senators emerged from a briefing with federal law enforcement officials saying they’ll likely boost funding on safety and security for members and their families in an upcoming government funding bill. This comes as security officials state that threats to lawmakers have “dramatically increased.”

Is (was?) Iran building a nuclear weapon? Some say yes, some say no.

Despite some nuance disagreement between DNI Haines and POTUS, the current viewpoint is that Iran is close to developing a bomb, which is the opinion of Israeli PM Netanyahu. Meanwhile, senior intelligence officials and the International Atomic Energy Agency acknowledged Iran’s high levels of uranium enrichment but indicated there was no evidence that Iran had resumed efforts to construct a nuclear weapon.

USPTO touts success in AI applications.

The USPTO reports progress in using Gen-AI tools to improve its patent examination process. AI-powered systems, including an internal chatbot and a new patent search platform, are helping examiners by streamlining searches and routine tasks. USPTO leadership says this is a step toward "augmented intelligence." The agency is exploring expanding AI use in trademark processing and other areas.

DOI and USDA’s Forest Services to merge their federal wildland firefighting programs.

The DOI and the USDA’s U.S. Forest Service are expected to soon merge their federal wildland firefighting programs, according to an E.O. The order gave the two agencies 90 days to combine the offices, programs, budgets and other resources of each wildfire management program. The move does not come with additional funding.

USDA reopens cloud integration pacts for bids.

The USDA has reopened its Stratus cloud integration procurement, inviting quotes for services like migration, security, architecture, governance, and identity management under what’s known as “Pool 2,” with submissions accepted through July 11. Stratus provides a unified platform for cloud brokerage, hosting, and enterprise data services, and also includes a separate Pool 3 for SaaS resellers.
