After a recent demonstration, Space Operations Command boss Lt. Gen. David Miller has said that better virtual training simulations are necessary to mimic real-life threats to better hone guardians’ skills. What was it like for NASA’s astronauts living in the simulated Mars-like environment?
NASA held a ceremony over the weekend to welcome four brave astronauts back to Earth after spending a year living and working on Mars. To survive, the crew had to grow their own food to supplement their rations, deal with half-hour long communication delays with Earth, and learn to live and work together in somewhat tight quarters. The mission was all part of NASA’s Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog — or CHAPEA — program, which is designed to test how long people can live, work and survive on other planets. Twice-yearly injections of a new pre-exposure prophylaxis drug are said to have provided young women who participated in a clinical trial in South Africa and Uganda with complete protection against HIV. 1790…mostly. — The very first US patent was issued in 1790 shortly after Congress passed the first patent statute. The first patent was issued to Samuel Hopkins for a process of making potash, an ingredient used in fertilizer. President George Washington signed the first patent.
That being said, Patent #1 was issued by the US Patent Office in 1836 to Senator John Ruggles for a traction wheel for steam locomotives. There were 9,957 patents that were issued in those 46 years before the official numbering system began. Those patents are known as the X-patents. (Read more)
