DEFENSE & AEROSPACE

Army tells industry: Soldiers need more power, but don’t just offer batteries and generators.

USA officials say virtually every formation is underpowered as drones, counter-UAS systems, networks and command posts demand more electricity than legacy vehicles can provide. Rather than adding heavy batteries or detectable generators, the service is asking industry for new approaches such as fuel cells, improved vehicle-generated power and alternatives to liquid fuel.

SPACECOM priorities: Space fires, counter-PLEO, and warfighting in the space domain.

SPACECOM commander general laid out his command's top warfighting priorities, with counter-proliferated LEO and space fires leading the list. Whiting said the ability to hold adversary space assets at risk is now central to SPACECOM's mission, not just a theoretical capability. He also stressed the need for speed in acquiring new systems and integrating commercial capabilities into the command's operational architecture.

Navy confirms nuclear spy submarine with secret module for seabed espionage and cable cutting.

The US Navy confirmed it is building a Virginia Block V submarine with a unique classified mission module in place of the standard 28-cell Virginia Payload Module. The sub will be capable of connecting to and cutting fiber-optic cables, destroying pipelines, raising objects from the seabed, and deploying underwater drones for deep-sea intelligence missions. It will supplement and eventually replace the 21-year-old USS Jimmy Carter, currently the Navy's primary covert seabed operations submarine.

NORTHCOM general: Weak drone defenses leave the US homeland dangerously exposed.

NORTHCOM's commanding general is warning that the US homeland's drone defenses are dangerously inadequate. Gen. Gregory Guillot said the military lacks sufficient authority, resources, and coordination to counter the growing UAS threat to the continental US, and that adversaries are actively exploiting that gap. He urged lawmakers to pass legislation clarifying legal authorities for shooting down drones over American soil.
