The USAF that the service intends to field at least 500 Collaborative Combat Aircraft by 2032, alongside 500 Massed Modular Aircraft and tens of thousands of FAMM cruise missiles by 2030. The two CCA platforms rolling off production lines now are General Atomics' FQ-42A Vengeance and Anduril's FQ-44A Fury. The USAF requested $996.5M in FY27 to kick off CCA Increment 1 procurement, with each drone targeted at roughly one-third the cost of an F-35.

A new missive, "Accelerated Mission Software," sets clear rules for AI-assisted software development across the Pentagon. The key takeaway is that AI-generated code is treated as unverified input, developers remain fully accountable, and any AI changes to security or safety-critical functions require human review. DOD also prohibits feeding non-public code into any unapproved generative AI tool.

Eight years after Space Policy Directive-3, the Traffic Coordination System for Space remains a pilot program that cannot even fuse satellite operator data with DOD observations to create accurate collision assessments. DOD and industry are now facing hard choices about whether Commerce can rescue it or whether the mission needs to revert to the Pentagon. One expert put it plainly: "The government still has not delivered the architecture the policy envisioned."

USAF Secretary Meink publicly confirmed that the USSF has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action. It’s the first time a US government official has acknowledged America has deployed weapon systems in orbit. Meink did not elaborate on what systems are deployed or whether they are kinetic or non-kinetic. He also disclosed flight-ready hardware for space-based interceptors tied to Golden Dome.

The NSA is getting reorganized into five mission centers covering AI, China, cybersecurity, combat support, and global intelligence. Implementation will begin in October, and full operational capacity is targeted for January. It is the most significant NSA reorganization in a decade, surpassing the NSA 21 overhaul from 2016. The elite Tailored Access Operations hacking unit will sit under the global intelligence arm and receive additional resources once the federal budget resets.

DOE's Loan Programs Office is actively financing virtual power plant projects to address a looming grid challenge: peak electricity demand is expected to increase for the first time in a decade while old power plants retire. Tripling current VPP capacity to 80-160 GW by 2030 could save roughly $10 billion in annual grid costs. LPO can finance projects through four authorities covering innovative energy, state-supported, energy infrastructure reinvestment, and tribal energy programs.

A federal judge blocked GSA from making more Polaris awards after finding the agency treated bidders unequally during the evaluation process. The sealed ruling found GSA allowed one bidder to fix a clerical error while denying another the same opportunity. Over 100 awards have already been made since January 2025. GSA cannot issue new awards until it addresses the prejudicial errors outlined in the sealed opinion.

FAA is replacing 1960s copper wires with fiber optic cables and modernizing radar, weather, and communications systems nine years ahead of the original schedule under its Brand New Air Traffic Control System initiative. Congress appropriated $12.5B for Phase 1, with Phase 2 estimated at $10.2B more. The problem: FAA has 11,389 separate project schedules that aren't integrated, and it has no lifecycle cost estimate.
