Pentagon partners with CIA’s In-Q-Tel for “technology scouting.”
DOD has formalized a partnership with CIA-backed In-Q-Tel to scout and vet emerging commercial technologies in areas including AI, quantum, hypersonics, directed energy, biomanufacturing, and contested logistics. The goal is to move promising prototypes more quickly into operational testing with combatant commands and reduce the risk of bringing nontraditional technologies into military programs.
Army creates autonomy command amid robo-warfare push.
The Army is creating a new Futures and Autonomous Systems Command (FASCOM) and naming a dedicated acquisition executive to accelerate development and fielding of autonomous capabilities across aviation, armor, sustainment, surveillance, targeting, and other missions. The move is intended to cut through acquisition delays as the Army expands autonomous systems across multiple formations.
Administrative delay is now an operational risk for counter-drone programs.
SecDef signed a five-page directive ordering JIATF-401 to treat any delays in counter-drone approvals as operational risks, not administrative inconveniences. The memo targets two of the biggest bottlenecks: spectrum authorization and authority to operate timelines, which SecDef wants cut from months to days or weeks for validated systems. The CIO has 30 days to review spectrum processes.

NSA sets 2027 PQC mandate and 2030 deadline for national security systems.
NSA is developing post-quantum cryptography resources to protect national security systems, the defense industrial base, and the broader DOD. The timeline is firm: new commercial national security systems must support quantum-resistant algorithms by 2027, and legacy systems that cannot run them face phaseout by 2030. The urgency is real. Adversaries are already using "harvest now, decrypt later" tactics, collecting encrypted data today to crack it when quantum computing matures.
SpaceX to launch 21 data transport satellites for the SDA.
SpaceX is set to launch 21 NOC-built satellites for the SDA’s Tranche 1 Transport Layer early Monday morning, expanding DOD’s LEO network for secure communications, missile tracking, and rapid data delivery to warfighters. The launch is part of the broader Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, which is expected to begin providing operational capabilities in 2027 and eventually include hundreds of interconnected satellites.

Tax chief pushes “AI-first IRS” to get more out of agency’s workforce.
IRS leadership is pushing an “AI-first” strategy to improve taxpayer service and collections after the agency cut more than a quarter of its workforce last year, while insisting the technology is meant to augment rather than replace employees. The IRS is already using AI and automation to process amended returns in under three days instead of 12–16 weeks, and officials say broader adoption could help shrink the tax gap and handle a more complex 2027 filing season.
TSA’s weak IT access controls increased likelihood of “catastrophic damage.”
A DHS IG audit found TSA failed to properly secure privileged IT accounts, conduct annual access reviews, and consistently disable accounts for departed employees, creating vulnerabilities that could expose sensitive information or cause “serious or catastrophic” operational damage. TSA has since begun tightening controls, including monthly access reviews and a more formal process for revoking access when employees leave.
New TMF investments: $83M for agentic AI, fast environmental reviews, and more.
The TMF approved about $83.4M for four projects at State, USDA, and DOT that will use AI and automation to streamline help desks, speed environmental reviews, modernize payroll, and improve airline-complaint processing. The projects are expected to save millions of labor hours and dollars by replacing legacy systems and automating tasks that currently take weeks or months.
