DIU leads DOD personnel data protection initiative.

The DIU has issued commercial vendor success memos in recognition of the companies that developed prototypes for technologies that safeguard the data of DOD personnel, as part of the Enhanced Protection of Information Capabilities, or EPIC, project. Four companies were selected to tackle different aspects of the EPIC project: Kinetic Data, Grey Market Labs, Ridgeline International, and Gnosko Associates. Read more

Sub-launched nuclear cruise missile will need “an entirely new industrial base.”

A controversial nuclear weapon project launched is running up against industrial realities that challenge its tight timeline. Intended as a relatively low-yield, submarine-launched weapon counter to Russian and Chinese “tactical” nuclear weapons, the Sea-Launched Cruise Missile – Nuclear (SLCM-N) very nearly defunded, only to be overruled by Congress. USAF reviews ejection seat deal: Collins, Martin-Baker gear up for a fight.

A Martin-Baker executive looked incredulous; a rival ejection seat-maker, Collins Aerospace, had suggested that some Martin-Baker latest ejection seats weren’t as safe as they should be. By the end of the year, the USAF plans to complete a review of the Next Generation Ejection Seat (NGES) program, whose contract is currently held by Collins. Read more

UAP reports soar: DOD office receives 757 new sightings.

The Pentagon’s UFO office has dropped its latest batch of sighting reports, once again emphasizing that it has found no evidence of alien technology. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) released a public version of a congressionally ordered comprehensive annual review of UAPs (UFOs). The Pentagon’s UFO office received 757 UAP reports during May 1, 2023 to June 1, 2024. Of those, 485 featured UAP incidents that occurred during the reporting period. Read more

GAO wants agencies to update cloud computing guidance to manage restrictive licensing.

Restrictive software licensing practices are impacting multiple federal agencies in the form of cost increases and limited choices of CSP or cloud architecture. The DOJ, NASA, USDOT, and VA all told the GAO that as result of restrictive practices in software licensing, the agencies either experienced or expected cost increases in acquisition, infrastructure, and licensing. Agencies are failing key FITARA IT management requirements.

A new report by the GAO finds that federal agencies are failing to fully address the key statutory requirements for portfolio management in the FITARA. The report found that the OMB is not fully addressing eight key statutory requirements for FITARA. Specifically, for IT portfolio reviews, the federal CIO is failing to conduct an annual review with each agency’s CIO. Read more

USPS loses $9.5B in FY24 and says another red year is coming.

The USPS lost $9.5 billion in fiscal 2024 despite sweeping reform efforts aimed at improving the agency’s financial outlook. However, its management team remains steadfast that its current course is the correct one. Looking at only the parts of the operation that USPS leadership considers within its control, the Postal Service actually cut its losses slightly from $2.3 billion in fiscal 2023 to $1.8 billion in the most recent year.
