Airbus has launched its own drone business.
Airbus, the maker of the long-flying Zephyr drone, has officially launched its own US drone business. The group builds upon Airbus’ success with Zephyr, which is a solar-powered aircraft that stayed aloft for 64 days above 60,000 feet in testing over the Yuma Proving Ground. Read more
Two things the Space Force needs from Congress—and one thing it definitely doesn’t.
What it needs: A senior civilian position over USSF. Also, wouldn’t it be lovely if it had its own independent Legislative Affairs and Public Affairs office so that the agency could finally untether itself from using the Air Force’s resources in this regard? Air Force plans production of CCA Wingman Drones by FY28.
The Air Force is planning to have wingman drones developed under the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program by FY28. AF Secretary Kendall said that the CCA effort is “one of the most important” programs in the Air Force’s FY24 budget request; the Air Force asked for $392 million for CCA in its FY24 request. DHS adds facial comparison, ML uses to its AI inventory.
Homeland Security's AI Inventory now includes a facial comparison tool being used by TSA and CBP. DHS has also added FEMA's geospatial damage assessments, which use machine learning and machine vision to assess damage caused by a disaster, and CBP’s use of AI to inform port of entry risk assessment decisions. Small Biz take note: DHS flips the upcoming CISA OBP support RFP from “Unrestricted” to “Small.”
The recent word out of CISA is that the next iteration of this 5-year contract to provide support for the office which leads the DHS efforts to implement the National Policy for Countering Improvised Explosive Devices (National C-IED Policy) and enhances the nation’s ability to prevent, protect against, respond to, and mitigate the use of explosives against critical infrastructure, will be going out as a small business set-aside action after all. Energy & Commerce chair critiques POTUS’ AI executive order.
Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers echoed testimony from other lawmakers and witnesses in affirming that responsibility and safety are needed for AI development to protect against bad actors. However, the EO doesn’t follow her preferred “light touch and market-driven approach” paired with clear guidance for the industry. Read more
GAO flags FAA for taking too long on its NextGen project.
The GAO is taking the FAA to task for slow progress on its years-long Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) project which aims to modernize U.S. air traffic management systems. In its report, GAO pointed to “mixed progress, across four critical program areas." Read more
