Finally! The Pentagon has agreed to create a super cloud service for the military.
The Pentagon is launching an initiative to provide U.S. military personnel with remote access to supercomputers. By teaming up with tech leaders in developing a supercomputer cloud service, this project will allow troops to leverage the capabilities of high-performance computing directly. Researchers will be able to use resources securely, and the military will have enhanced operational efficiency. A win for everybody, don’t you think? Read more
DISA wrestles with “tech debt” in the midst of cyber threats.
“Technology Debt” occurs when outdated technology accumulates within an organization, and then new technology is piled on top. As technology evolves, managing this debt becomes increasingly difficult for DISA. “If we are not updating and modernizing the way that we should be along the way, we tend to build out that technical debt so it becomes more expensive.” Read more

“Federal Privacy Law” dreams are crushed; Its future is still in question.
Privacy Pro hopes were struck down last week when the federal privacy law v2.0, the “American Privacy Rights Act,” suffered a shattering setback. After revisions to the proposed regulation, a planned markup on June 27 was canceled, raising doubts about the law’s future. Read more
Contractors were raided near Army’s training headquarters.
The Pentagon and U.S. Army investigative units executed search warrants in Florida for the offices of Cole Engineering (a By Light company). Officials neither confirmed nor denied the office’s involvement in the raid. In 2021, Cole Engineering became the prime contractor for the Army’s new cyber training environment project, securing a contract worth as much as $957.7 million over eight years to complete the work. Neither Army nor Cole Engineering representatives confirmed or discussed whether the search warrants were in regard to that contract. Read more

CIVILIAN
The Chevron Deference’s demise.
The Chevron deference. Established in the 1984 Chevron case, it required courts to defer to reasonable agency interpretations of federal law. On June 28, the Supreme Court upended the 40 year ruling. The new ruling holds that courts must exercise independent judgment in deciding whether an agency acted within its statutory authority and may not simply defer to the agency’s interpretation of ambiguities in the law. It’s time to say goodbye to the International Space Station.
Under NASA's $1.2 billion contact, Space X will make and develop a US “Deorbit Vehicle” that will take the ISS out of orbit and towards its final resting grounds in 3030. The SpaceX-made vehicle could launch later this decade. It would latch onto the ISS — a nearly one million-pound (453,000-ton) structure roughly the size of a football field — and guide the craft as it plunges out of Earth's orbit. Read more
Gratuities: It’s still a problem for government contractors.
The recent Snyder v. Supreme Court ruling made it clear that state and local officials are not prohibited from accepting “gratuities” under the primary federal law regulating corruption, 18 USC § 666. However, this ruling does not change the existing prohibition on gratuities to federal officials and contractor employees. Just so we’re clear: kickbacks are still illegal. Read more
