A. The federal government spent $3.2 billion on fire suppression efforts in 2023. Those costs were to suppress 56,580 fires that covered 2,693,910 acres of land. (source) To put that in perspective, at least one news source has estimated that as of Thursday evening, the wildfires in California have caused about $135 billion (or more) in damage and economic loss (so far).
