IonQ has finalized its acquisition of Capella Space.

This represents a major milestone in the company's mission to develop the world’s first space-to-space and space-to-ground satellite quantum key distribution (QKD) network.

IonQ is set to integrate Capella’s satellite infrastructure with its quantum technology to begin building a space-based quantum key distribution network. Once it’s done, the QKD network will support secure communications by preventing encryption keys from being intercepted or duplicated without triggering detection. It will also serve as a platform for additional quantum networking and sensing growth vectors. Capella’s customer’s will have access to rapid, highly-secure SAR and remote sensing via the first Earth observation platform powered by quantum technology.

IonQ is a computing hardware and software company. It develops a general-purpose trapped ion quantum computer and software to generate, optimize, and execute quantum circuits.

Capella Space is a radar information services company. It delivers on-demand SAR data, imagery, analytics, constellation tasking, and other synthetic aperture radar (SAR) services.
