Pentagon opens state competition to build America's first new military base in 40 years.
DOD announced a competition to host the Pentagon's first new military base built from the ground up in four decades. The winning state gets hundreds of thousands of acres, housing for up to 25,000 troops, independent power generation, modern air defenses, and classical architecture. Selection will be merit-based on land, red tape removal, housing, schools, and community support.
Submarine supply chain on thin ice: Four material families that could sink the program.
The US submarine industrial base relies on a handful of sole-source suppliers for propulsor castings, hull steels, sonar ceramics, and anechoic coatings, with almost no margin for error. The Navy has poured $2.6B into supplier development since 2018, but a 2025 GAO report found no clear metrics linking that spending to actual production gains.
NDS update touts Golden Dome and munitions but skips Russia, Iran costs, and European retreat.
The Pentagon's recent NDS implementation report to Congress highlights Golden Dome progress, $53B in munitions acceleration, and European burden sharing. What it skips: the war in Iran has set back arsenal replenishment by "months and years," the U.S. quietly cut brigade combat teams in Europe from five to three, and Russia's hybrid attacks on NATO members go unmentioned.
Related: Differing cost estimates: Pentagon says Golden Dome will cost $185B, but CBO estimates it at $1.2T. Congress wants answers.
