B) Synthetic silk stockings to replace silk used in parachutes— During World War II, silk was a critical war resource used in making parachutes, so the U.S. government restricted its civilian use and issued contracts for the production of synthetic alternatives, such as nylon stockings. While silk stockings were once a popular Valentine’s Day gift, they became scarce, and nylon replacements—first introduced by DuPont—were rapidly developed under government contracts to support both military and civilian needs.
