The Senate Finance Committee has a bipartisan framework for legislation they say would equip the unemployment system for the next economic crisis. Although the framework itself is not a bill, the hope is that the coming proposal will shore up the system in the long term following the pandemic, when states struggled to deliver benefits and prevent fraud. OPM faces its first test of recent retirement processing tweaks.
The number of new retirement claims doubled between Dec2023 and Jan2024, giving the OPM a chance to stress the efficacy of recent tweaks to the retirement process. After years of complaints, OPM made efforts to improve the process, and it seems to have worked; the 14,292 pending claims at the end of last year was the smallest backlog OPM has seen since 2017 and is fairly close to their target.
