Congress unveils $895.2B compromise NDAA.

The House and Senate released their compromise version of the NDAA, with a $895.2 billion topline. The newly revealed topline means the NDAA will come in under the congressionally mandated budget caps imposed by the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) despite a push in the Senate to surpass that number. The bill authorizes $884B for FY25, including $850B for DOD programs. Read more

Robot reality check: Crewed warplanes will remain vital for years.

The U.S. military is many years away from letting robots take over the role of human pilots, according to the USAF official who oversees development of AI piloting technology. “There may be someday we can completely rely on robotized warfare” but “it is centuries away,” said Brig. How the DOS’s Global Engagement Center hopes to fight deepfakes abroad.

As the Global Engagement Center fights for funding, a set of documents show what staffers at the DOS’s outfit for combatting foreign disinformation abroad might hope to do in the fight against AI-modified and or AI-generated misleading images. The documents show that the GEC has custom-built AI to detect these kinds of images, including an algorithm that one presentation says identifies “which accounts are using AI-synthesized images of people.” Read more

NATO to launch a new cyber center by 2028.

For the alliance to be better equipped to deal with cyber threats, NATO is in the process of starting a new cyber center—to go online by 2028—that will meld parts of its various cyber entities into one. Coined the NATO Integrated Cyber Defense Center, the joint entity will combine NATO’s Cyber Security Center, Cyber Operations Center, Cyber Threat Analysis Branch, and parts of the CIO’s office. One of the first things that the new DOGE agency will do is update the government's antiquated technology and stop fraud in government programs, efforts Ramaswamy called “low-hanging fruit.” He went on to say, “Technology improvements across the federal government are not only going to be important, [but] I think it’s necessary in order to actually get the job done.” Read more

FCC proposes updates to wiretap security standards following Chinese telecom hacks.

The FCC’s top official shared a draft ruling that, if adopted, would immediately require telecommunications firms to secure their networks against unauthorized access to systems that house wiretap requests from law enforcement, according to an agency news release. Chairwoman Rosenworcel also floated a separate notice of proposed rulemaking that, if approved, would require that communications providers submit annual attestations to the agency about their security posture. HII to buy manufacturers W. International SC and Vivid Empire SC.

HII has announced its intent to acquire the assets and workforce of the South Carolina-based complex metal fabricator W International SC and Vivid Empire SC. The shipbuilder said the transaction will increase its capacity to support military customers. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of FY24. Read more
