The first secure teletypewriter system was introduced in 1939 to protect sensitive communications between embassies and Washington D.C.. The cipher machine was adopted in 1943, and the early telephone scrambler was introduced in 1941. The U.S. began using high-frequency radios in the 1920s for embassy communication, but these were not specifically secure.
