Golden Dome's space interceptors revive Reagan's Star Wars vision with modern technology.

The Golden Dome initiative is reviving a concept that Ronald Reagan proposed in 1983 but never built: space-based interceptors capable of destroying ballistic missiles in their boost phase. New propulsion, miniaturization, and sensor technologies have made the idea more feasible than it was during the Cold War. The administration's FY27 budget request includes funding to begin development, though cost estimates and technical challenges remain significant.

Service leaders acknowledge the transition from legacy PEOs to nine PAEs is a significant organizational change and that early missteps could undermine the reform's goals. The key risks include continuity of ongoing programs, workforce transitions, and the pace of contracting activity during the changeover.
