SPACECOM released its first-ever Space Warfighting Environment 2040, a 37-page warfighter-first document warning that fixed ground infrastructure will be "targeted early and often" in any future conflict. The report also formally flags cislunar space as a domain of emerging military competition.
Navy clears the red tape to scale 3D-printed submarine parts.
USN has issued new technical requirements that let engineers replace legacy cast and wrought submarine parts with 3D-printed metal components without repeating slow, part-by-part approvals and testing. The move is meant to ease supply-chain bottlenecks, reduce obsolescence risk and speed construction and repair across the submarine fleet.
The global munitions crisis requires Foreign Military Sales reform.
U.S. munitions shortages are being compounded by a slow, decades-old FMS process that can take years to move weapons from partner requests to contracts and delivery. The Atlantic Council recommends using existing authorities to accelerate emergency sales, expand co-production with allies and shift some items from FMS to Direct Commercial Sales, which could both replenish partners faster and strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base.

Thousands of former IRS staffers kept access to sensitive systems; watchdog flags security.
Nearly 17,000 IRS employees who accepted deferred resignations still had access to the agency’s main network while on leave, and about 14,000 retained access to one or more sensitive systems despite having no legitimate business need. TIGTA warned that the lapse created a risk of unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information and urged IRS to immediately revoke access when employees or contractors no longer need it.
GSA builds governmentwide AI assistant for acquisition professionals.
GSA disclosed more details about SAG, a governmentwide AI platform built with OMB to help contracting professionals plan and execute acquisitions using tools grounded in current regulations, policy and acquisition data. GSA is positioning the platform as part of implementation of the Revolutionary FAR Overhaul. Register for training to be held on August 25.
How will NASA’s astronaut training hub change with commercial space stations?
As NASA prepares to retire the ISS around 2030, JSC is increasingly adapting its astronaut training facilities—including Mission Control, Building 9 and the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory—to support commercial space stations and private spaceflight companies. NASA expects to shift from primarily operating its own station to serving as a customer and partner, offering its training infrastructure, expertise and facilities to commercial providers such as Axiom, Vast, Blue Origin and Starlab.
