NSF is building a leadership-class computing facility at UT Austin.

The Leadership-Class Computing Facility (LCCF) will deploy the largest academic supercomputer dedicated to open-scientific research in the NSF portfolio. The supercomputer, Horizon, will provide 10x performance improvement for simulation over the current NSF Leadership-Class Computing system, Frontera. For AI applications, the leap forward will be even larger, with more than 100x improvement over Frontera. Read more

Buyout firm Vista Equity is exploring options including a sale of Sonatype in a deal that could value the cybersecurity firm at more than $1.5 billion including debt. Fulton, Maryland-based Sonatype has tapped Goldman Sachs to solicit interest from potential buyers, which could include other private equity firms. Sonatype has also worked with government departments including the USPTO and the DOE. Read more

How far can the new hydrogen-powered, San Francisco Bay ferry run?

The world’s first hydrogen-powered commercial passenger ferry will start operating on San Francisco Bay as part of plans to phase out diesel-powered vessels. The 70-foot (21-meter) catamaran called the MV Sea Change will transport up to 75 passengers along the waterfront between Pier 41 and the downtown San Francisco ferry terminal for free starting July 19. Sea Change can travel about 300 nautical miles and operate for 16 hours before it needs to refuel. Read more
