As costs for the Air Force’s nuclear-tipped Minuteman III ICBM replacement balloon and its schedule slides by as much as two years, officials clarified that the LGM-35A Sentinel program will move forward and that “we will have to find the money. Sentinel is going to be funded." Read more

Software delay will reduce F-35 deliveries for a second year.

Lockheed will deliver just 75 to 100 of the tri-service jets this year; that’s down from the 147-to-153 range announced just three weeks ago, and likely even less than the 96 or so delivered last year against the same target. The problem is with the Technology Rollout-3 software, part of the Block 4 improvements to the planes’ sensors and weapons. Jets equipped with TR-3 were originally to begin arriving in late 2023, a date that slipped to April or June. Read more

DOJ discloses FBI project with Amazon Rekognition tool.

The DOJ has revealed that the FBI is in the initial stages of utilizing Amazon Rekognition. Despite Amazon's previous announcement of a moratorium on police use of Rekognition, it remains unclear whether the FBI is employing facial recognition technology through this project, named "Amazon Rekognition – AWS – Project Tyr," which is focused on customizing the tool for reviewing and identifying items containing nudity, weapons, explosives, and other identifying information. NGA launches National GEOINT Operations Center.

NGA’s round-the clock “watch floor” has been in operation since the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, an NGA predecessor organization, was formed in 1996. Building on lessons learned from more than two decades of expertise and fusing multiple watch functions, the National GEOINT Operations Center delivers distinct visual products and geospatial information to military and national-level decision-makers. FTC announces market inquiry between AI developers and cloud service providers.

The FTC will launch an inquiry into partnerships and investments made between AI developers. Chairwoman Khan said that the FTC will focus on assessing if agreements between major cloud providers — such as Amazon, Microsoft and others — are influencing the “competition across layers of the AI stack.” Read more
