Lockheed will build next-gen interceptors in a $17B deal.

The MDA has selected Lockheed Martin to develop a new interceptor to defend the USA against intercontinental ballistic missiles, axing competitor Northrop Grumman. Lockheed’s selection is not a new award; the aerospace giant will continue to use funds provided by a 2021 contract. MDA accelerated their procurement plans due to a combination of budget constraints and confidence in current data to make an informed selection. Read more

Military space program classification rules: Pentagon will make it simpler.

Overclassification is the number one culprit limiting our ability to conduct operational cooperation in space with our allies. “Our ability to work closely with allies and partners in the space domain, and our ability to use our space capabilities to protect and defend the Joint Force, requires the right information getting to the warfighter at operationally relevant speeds. But that information flow continues to be significantly hampered by the overclassification of space activities.” Read more

Mideast missile duels have cost US Navy nearly $1B.

The U.S. Navy is nearly $1 billion in the hole after defending Israel from Iranian missiles last weekend and fighting off Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping since October. Now Navy is asking lawmakers to approve $95 billion in supplemental funding. Interceptor missiles are roughly twice as expensive than the anti-ship missiles they are built to destroy. Variants of the Standard Missile-3 run from $9.7 million to $27.9 million apiece. Read more

NSA offers advice to strengthen AI system security.

The NSA released a Cybersecurity Information Sheet (CSI), “Deploying AI Systems Securely: Best Practices for Deploying Secure and Resilient AI Systems.” The CSI is intended to support National Security System owners and Defense Industrial Base companies that will be deploying and operating AI systems designed and developed by an external entity. The CSI is the first release from NSA’s Artificial Intelligence Security Center (AISC). Read more
