Former DOD acquisition chief highlights trust issues between DOD and Congress.

Fixing DOD’s acquisition system, which many criticize as being stuck in the 1960s, is becoming a big priority for 2023, after Congress created a special commission to examine the process as a part of the 2022 Defense Authorization Act and come up with reform recommendations. One commission member, Ellen Lord, former Pentagon acquisitions chief, highlighted the lack of trust between Congress and the Pentagon. Read more

As he completed his tenure as leader of the U.S. Space Force, Air Force Gen. America saw a staggering increase in alcohol-related deaths during the pandemic.

The US saw a 26% increase in deaths caused by alcohol during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a study released Friday by the CDC. This massive spike represents about 13 deaths per 100,000 Americans, marking the highest rate in at least 40 years. CDC data showed that deaths increased in almost every age group, though the rate for men was anywhere from two to four times higher than for women. The 26 percent bump is a stratospheric rise to a statistic that had already been increasing — the CDC said the rate of alcohol-related deaths from 2000 to 2018 had never increased more than 7 percent. Read more
