DOD pays ethical hackers $75K for finding 350 vulnerabilities.

It can pay to be a hacker! DOD has recently paid $75,000, with an additional $35,000 in bonuses, to white hat hackers for finding nearly 350 vulnerabilities in defense systems. The Hack the U.S. initiative began on July 4 and involved vetted hackers assisting military officials with identifying security flaws before malicious actors do. (Warning: cool graphics.) Read more

USAF releases $5.3B cybersecurity RFP

The Air Combat Command has released an RFP for a 10-year, $5.3 billion Enterprise Cyber Capabilities procurement, with a bidding deadline of Oct. 26. The contract includes modeling and simulation, cyber mission essential support, and threat assessment. Read more

For JADC2, DOD must guard innovation through cumbersome acquisition.

The DOD must ensure that innovation survives military’s notoriously cumbersome acquisition process if it wants its ambitious JADC2 effort to actually work, according to a new brief from the CSIS. According to the report, there has been a steady decline in the total number of vendors supplying electronics, communications technologies and sensors to the DOD in the last 15 years. Read more

NRO awards six commercial space companies satellite RF study contracts.

NRO has awarded study contracts to six commercial space companies to explore the capability of satellite radio frequency detection to meet military signal detection needs. Part of a broader initiative known as Strategic Commercial Enhancement, NRO is evaluating how it can supplement government-built systems with commercial technology. Read more

Surveillance telescope functional in Australia, according to Space Command.

A U.S.-built space-monitoring telescope that was transported from New Mexico to Western Australia is now fully operational, Space Operations Command officials announced. Developed by DARPA and MIT, the telescope can locate and track debris in geosynchronous orbit, about 22,000 miles above the Earth’s surface. Read more

Okay, so you FOIA’ed the DOD and got some info. Can you sell that data for profit?

One family did. The Poseys owned a family business that sold unclassified technical information–like stuff about a new engine in a F-16 fighter plane (this was in 1978)–which the company then sold to companies that wanted to bid on DOD contracts to repair military aircraft of manufacture spare parts. The advent of FOIA made this kind of data-mining even easier. The ensuing story is a mix of fight for transparency + learning the govcon trade…and exploiting it for all its worth. Read more
